- Debate at Airmic focused on state of insurance market and emerging business risks
The state of the insurance market and the ever-changing nature of business risks were some of the hot topics discussed by delegates at the recent Airmic conference.
The annual event, held this year at the ICC conference centre in Birmingham over three days from June 16, attracted its usual assorted mix of risk managers, brokers and insurers.
For Zurich, the conference was an unqualified success – with the chance for the insurer to develop even stronger relationships with its brokers and their customers, as well as make additional ones with new prospects.
“It’s a unique event, but one that is more than worthwhile for us,” says Simon Crisford, Head of Global and London Market Brokers at Zurich Global Corporate.
“We strive to have that tripartite relationship and, although we don’t ever want to tread on toes – we are always very conscious of it being a broker-led relationship – we have managed to have many productive meetings at Airmic this year, where it is easy to facilitate that sort of engagement with the broker and risk manager.”
With new capacity increasingly moving in on the insurance market and rates continuing to slide ever lower to potentially unsustainable levels for insurers – much talk at this year’s Airmic event revolved around the issue of quality rather than price.
As ever, Zurich continues to strive to provide additional insight and value to its customers, as well as maintaining service excellence.
And at Airmic, Zurich’s launched its latest offering for the benefit of its customers – called My Zurich – an online risk management portal that gives easy access on a real-time basis to customers’ claims and policy information. Brokers, too, can access the tool if a customer provides access.
“Zurich is constantly looking to give our brokers angles to differentiate when they go to their customers and prospects,” says Simon.

Another theme to come out of this year’s Airmic conference was that the risk management community must work hard with insurers to develop innovative solutions for rapidly emerging and hard-to-assess risks – an area discussed in depth by some of the main keynote speakers in Birmingham.
Multinationals are seeing important business areas that are hard to insure against as risks emerge and evolve, such as in the cyber realm, supply chains, the area of intellectual capital and corporate reputation. Food for thought, indeed.
But with the doors firmly shut at another successful Airmic event, thoughts now turn to 2015 and Liverpool, which will be the next city to host the insurance buyers’ trade association conference.
“We can’t wait for next year,” says Simon. “It’s a big event and, as witnessed this year, we always try to make a big splash.”
