For many businesses across the UK, work shut down when the Prime Minister announced strict lockdown measures in the face of Covid-19 spreading throughout the country.
This was not the case for the Zurich Engineering team however, who continued inspections where deemed safe to do so all around the UK to ensure UK PLC’s had their statutory inspections completed where ever possible and our Engineers were granted key worker status.
The team consists of 680 staff including 570 engineer surveyors around the country, with the vast majority of work done offsite by surveyors traveling to various locations ensuring safety and highlighting any defects.
At the time of writing, and 109 days after the very first lockdown measures were announced, Zurich’s engineers have completed over one million safety inspections. During lockdown our surveyors were completing 75,000 inspections a week, and the same pace has continued even as certain restrictions have eased.
The sheer scale of the work done by our engineers is impressive. In 2019, 4.5 million inspections were carried out, with over 300,000 defects identified – meaning 300,000 potential risks and claims negated.
The million inspections carried out since lockdown began have resulted in 7,500 serious defects being recorded, as well as thousands more considered to be less serious.
Keeping businesses moving
The start of lockdown meant that many businesses shut down for the foreseeable future, yet that doesn’t mean their susceptibility to risk diminished. Additionally, with daily briefings from health and senior officials came changes to requirements such as distancing and methods of working – something our team needed to stay on top of every day in order to ensure the safety of engineers and their work.
Whilst our engineers worked to help keep hospitals, care homes, food and drink companies, power stations and retail companies safe and compliant, they were ensuring that those organisations, deemed essential services by the government, could continue to serve the country.
In addition to this, those who were asked to stop trading or modify the way they traded (such as moving to online only) had to undergo inspections to ensure their new way of working was as safe as their usual routine for places such as warehouses and delivery vehicles.
To ensure the safety of both of engineer surveyors and those who come into contact with them, Zurich distributed 350,000 wipes, 3,500 bottles of hand sanitiser, 30,000 masks and 350,000 pairs of gloves to staff through lockdown, whilst members of staff also produced and provided PPE to local hospitals in their spare time.
