Broker golf winner talks challenges on and off the course

This year saw the inaugural Zurich Insurance Masters golf tournament. Taking place across three of the country’s finest courses, brokers battled to find the best golfer in the UK market.

The competition opened with two regional qualifying events in June and culminated on 12 October with the grand final. Finalists teed off at the Grove Hotel’s renowned championship course in Hertfordshire.

Competition was fierce, but one golfer emerged triumphant, proving himself to be the ‘Best Golfer in the UK Broker Market’ for 2015.

Insider spoke to the Zurich Insurance Masters champion golfer, Anders Lewis of Arthur J Gallagher, about his win as well as the issues facing brokers in the current market.

Q. How does it feel to win the Zurich Insurance Masters golf tournament?

Great! The trophy has taken pride of place on the windowsill at work.

Q. Can you talk us through your win? Was it in the bag from the start or was luck on your side?

I certainly didn’t expect to win – I just played really steady golf. I don’t think 31 points would normally win these sorts of events, so I think there was definitely an element of luck on the day.

Q. What was the best part of the day?

Realising I had won!

Q. What are the best golf courses you’ve played?

Royal Liverpool (take lots of balls for that one), Woburn and Castle Combe.

Q. You met professional golfer Jamie Donaldson. Did he offer you any tips?

No tips, but he was such a nice guy, very down to earth. I actually ended up sitting opposite him at dinner, which was great. He was having a laugh and joke with everyone: a really top guy.

Q. Would you recommend the Zurich Insurance Masters to fellow professionals?

Q. Moving on to professional matters, what do you see as the biggest challenge facing brokers today?

Communication can offer huge challenges. When a business is being acquired – whether that be a broker or an insurer – I think it is really important to ensure all parties know exactly what is happening, when it’s happening, and why.

Q. How important is online reputation and the use of social media for today’s brokers?

Huge. A vast percentage of business is now being transacted online, and a poor reputation will very quickly lead to poor results.

Social media is also very important, as it bridges a gap for younger buyers especially. An effective social media campaign can prove its worth in a very short period of time.

Q. What do you see as the biggest emerging risk at the moment?

Climate change.

Q. In the next ten years, what do you think we’ll be insuring that might not be commonplace today?

Fully autonomous vehicles.

Q. What do you love most about working in the insurance industry?

Dealing with clients who genuinely appreciate great service. Many realise it’s not always straight forward, and the recognition we get for going the extra mile is always appreciated.
