After 13 years working as a recruitment consultant for agencies in the UK and Australia, Simon Yensen launched his own business, Six Recruitment, in 2017.
Six Recruitment specialises in providing experienced candidates for senior positions within the IT and financial services sectors.
Here, Simon describes the challenges and rewards of running an office-based business, and explains why GDPR is a major challenge for his industry.
Q: What were your main priorities and challenges when you launched your business?
A: The first few weeks and months were really about getting all the infrastructure in place – the IT systems, the communications, the company website and so on – so that I could then focus on the business objective, which is to provide a better service for my clients than they can find anywhere else in this sector in the UK.
Q: What is the best thing about running a business?
A: I love the freedom of expression, and the ability to make my own decisions. I like being the one who is responsible for service levels.
Q: What are your most important business assets?
A: In my industry, data is everything. Recruiters hold lots of personal data about their clients, so it’s essential to make sure this data is secure. My company uses cloud software, so the information we process is held off-site. I also make sure that all our office computers have up-to-date antivirus software, and all laptops are password-protected.
Q: What will the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) mean for your business?
A: GDPR is going to be a significant change for all recruiters. We are going to be held much more accountable than previously for how we store and process personal data.
The most important thing from my perspective is to have a clear understanding of what my obligations are. For example, GDPR will give my clients increased rights to access their personal data and request its removal. I recognise how important it is to have the right processes and security provisions in place in order to comply with GDPR.
Q: How important is insurance to your business?
A: I’m fortunate that I’ve yet to experience an incident where I’ve needed to make a claim, but I’m aware that accidents and mistakes can happen, so insurance is important. If one of our contractors was working on a client’s IT system, for example, and a mistake occurred that led to a loss for which we were liable, it would be essential to have the appropriate cover in place.
Q: If you experienced a loss and had to make a claim, how would you expect it to be handled?
A: Firstly, I would expect the person on the other end of the phone to be knowledgeable enough to ask the right questions, so that they could immediately understand the situation and be able to reassure me that everything was going to be okay. I would also want them to be able to explain clearly how the claims process was going to work.
If I suffered a loss, it could affect my clients too, so it would be really important for me that the claim was handled in a professional manner and processed as quickly as possible. Ideally, I’d like to deal with one person, so that I wasn’t having to provide the same answers to the same questions again and again.
Q: Finally, what else do you think a good insurer should be able to do for you?
A: I would welcome anything that my insurer could do to help me get back up and running quickly after a loss – for example any additional support services they could offer beyond just the basic cover.
Additionally, I would expect an insurer to be able to share its expertise on risk management. I’m a recruitment expert, not an insurance expert, so having the benefit of an insurer’s expertise on how to reduce the risk of claims would certainly be appreciated.
